Gungho\’s Puzzle & Dragons Z has had a fantastic debut on 3DS, selling over 500,000 units on its first week.
Now, depending on who you follow, it either sold 543,630 units (Media Create) or 534,782 units (Famitsu). By Famitsu\’s estimation, they were able to sell about 78 % of total inventory. On the same week, 3DS sales also rose to approximately 180,000 units from approximately 120,000 units the week before.
Originally a smartphone game, Puzzle & Dragons is a gem matching game where you can move one gem around the playfield to affect the positions of the other gems. On top there is a pseudo RPG mode where you battle monsters.
Puzzle & Dragons quickly rose to become Japan\’s # 1 mobile game, to the level of an Angry Birds. It was estimated Gungho was grossing as much as $ 2 million per month, and it even reached a point where they passed Nintendo\’s market capitalization.
Gungho\’s CEO Kazuki Morishita has stated that he hopes the game would sell at least 1 million units. Following the original\’s fall from grace in iOS and Android in Japan, hitting half of that goal in the first week is good news for sure.
