Since Nintendo\’s steep downward revision to their 2013 financial forecast, something Nintendo apologized to investors for, due to \”unexpectedly weak sales particularly in the overseas markets\” during Q3 of 2013, there have been various pessimistic reports and comments suggesting a negative outcome for the future of Nintendo\’s dedicated video game platforms. However, Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata has maintained that the company will keep its core line of business while making other attempts to modernize.
Dedicated Platforms Are Being Maintained
Nintendo maintained that dedicated video game platforms integrating hardware and software will remain Nintendo\’s core business and are, naturally, actively making preparations for future hardware. They will not be shifting business towards other platforms.
Nintendo reiterated that capitalizing on their own platforms will produce the best returns as proven by past successes such as the Nintendo DS and Wii.
Looking to Evolve Yet Again
With the Internet and smart devices becoming increasingly popular, Nintendo is looking to take advantage of such elements and believe they will have no problem adapting.
To reassure that they are capable of adapting to the needs of modern society while maintaining their core ideologies, Nintendo went into a brief history of their company. We\’ve consolidated the historical events discussed into a list, which can be viewed below.
- Started as a playing card company 125 years ago
- Evolved into a toy company
- Evolved into an electronic toy company
- Evolved to a company running video game platforms
- Popularized home console gaming
- Popularized dual-screen gaming
- Popularized motion control gaming
Despite all these adaptions, Nintendo says that it has \”always tried to create something new from materials and technologies available at that time and to position entertainment as our core business\”. In this way, Nintendo will continue to value self-innovation in the future.
In addition to self-innovation, Nintendo will continue to capitalize on collaborations with various outside partners in order to adapt to societal changes in the video game industry. Such collaboration will continue to be a part of Nintendo\’s operations from research and development to manufacture and sales.
