Nintendo has rolled out a new feature on their official website. As of now, users can pre-order select titles digitally off of Nintendo\’s website. In short, users pre-order the game, then receive a code for the title once the game launches. Although at first it may seem like an arbitrary step to pre-order digital games online, there are actually some benefits.
First of all, since you purchase the title using your Nintendo Network ID, you can use whatever payment option is already saved for your ID, and your credit card information does not have to be re-submitted. More importantly, however, is how this may tie into yesterday\’s news. In short, it seems like Nintendo is paving an online system where users can purchase codes online and input them immediately, which allows for immediate and automatic download of the product. Of course, this is all speculation at this point, but if the stars do align it seems like Nintendo is heading toward unified accounts.
Likewise, players can also now purchase codes for already-released software, a nice feature for those who may have not purchased Super Smash Bros yet.
