Humanature Studios is a rather unique small-scale indie developer based in Albany CA. The studio was founded by Greg Johnson, the original designer of cult-classic ToeJam and Earl. The studio have just launched their first Kickstarter campaign with the hope to bring ToeJam and Earl to a new generation of gamers. Their goal \”is to bring smiles and laughter into people\’s homes, and to make games that bring people closer and let them feel good\”.
The original ToeJam and Earl released on the Sega Genesis and both it and it\’s two sequels were published by Sega. Fortunately for gamers worldwide the studio has retained the rights to the license which has seen releases on the Mega Drive, Xbox, WiiWare and PSN. Humanature intend for this new title to follow as closely to the original title as possible. There will be a fixed isometric camera, 2D sprites, simple controls and an emphasis on co-operative play. There will be a few elements pulled from the second game in the series as well as a couple brand new elements thrown in to add a dash of newness to affairs.
The developers have yet to nail down exactly which platforms the game will be released upon outside of the usual PC, Mac & Linux but they fully intend to support \”all platforms\”. Considering the previous titles in the series featured re-releases on WiiWare it would be surprising for the Wii U eShop to not receive a port. The game is currently in development in Unity 3D without a concrete release date. Humanature have only suggested that the game will be done when it\’s done as they don\’t want to rush it.
