Last night, eSports took center stage on ESPN2 with a PC game, Heroes of the Storm, which pitted 2 College teams against eachother. While not a traditional sport, the world of eSports has taken a competitive life of it’s own, with games like Smash Bros. being at the forefront of the revolution. It appears that at least one member of the ESPN staff didn’t appreciate the coverage though, as Colin Cowherd had some strong words for ESPN in regards to eSports competition.
HERE’S WHAT’S GOING TO GET ME OFF THE AIR. IF I AM EVER FORCED TO COVER GUYS PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, I WILL RETIRE. AND MOVE TO A RURAL FISHING VILLAGE AND SELL BAIT. YOU WANT ME OUT? DEMAND VIDEO GAME TOURNAMENTS ON ESPN BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT APPEARED ON ESPN 2 YESTERDAY…
I TOLERATED DONKEY KONG, OKAY? I’LL TELL YOU WHAT THAT WAS THE EQUIVALENT THERE, OF ME PUTTING A GUN IN MY MOUTH AND HAVING TO LISTEN TO THAT.
Clearly making a correlation between watching eSports and committing suicide is completely tasteless and out of line. No word on whether he will be reprimanded for these statements, but more than likely some sort of recourse is in order.
