The majority of the details surrounding Nintendo’s mysterious new console, the ‘NX’, have only been rumors. One of the more popular details that have come out of some of these rumors is that Nintendo has ditched a conventional disc drive, and have instead decided to use cartridges/cards as the NX’s storage media. A new patent filing for Zelda: Breath of the Wild has now added some possible truth to these rumors.
As you can see, this patent was filed just a few days ago. While this doesn’t outright confirm the rumors, this does make it arguably more likely that they are true.
While it may seem like a dumb idea to move to cartridges, there are actually a lot of benefits that come with this. Reduced loading times and higher read/write speeds would greatly enhance the gaming experience. There would also be no moving parts which leads to greater durability. The console’s weight would be reduced too, not to mention this would allow for a smaller unit size overall.
